School Shutdowns

In the event of future school shutdowns, my priority will be to thoroughly evaluate spending within administration buildings. As part of a cost-saving and efficiency initiative, I support the relocation of all central district staff to a newly renovated section of West High School. This project, which is estimated to cost approximately $20 million, offers significant financial and logistical benefits. By consolidating operations into this shared space, the district would save an estimated $150,000 annually in utility costs. Additionally, this move would eliminate the planned $8.6 million expense required for repairs and maintenance of the current administrative facilities. The existing administrative building, appraised at roughly $3 million, presents an opportunity to generate revenue if sold. Ideally, I would advocate for the property to be purchased by the City of Green Bay or transferred to a Community Land Trust to ensure it continues to serve a public purpose. This is to only come up in the event of future school closures with degraded student conditions proposed.

From conversations with parents in the community, I have heard growing concerns about the impact of school closures on students and families. Specifically, there is unease about children being placed in overcrowded classrooms and having to attend schools located farther from home. These factors not only disrupt the sense of community but also risk compromising the quality of education. It is increasingly important that we prioritize maintaining reasonable class sizes and equitable access to resources. Closing additional schools would directly undermine these goals, and I am committed to exploring alternatives that uphold the standard of education our students deserve.
